"Psycho" is a song recorded by South Korean girl group Red Velvet for their first compilation album The ReVe Festival: Finale, which also acts as the third and final installment of the group's The ReVe Festival trilogy. Composed by Andrew Scott, Cazzi Opeia and EJAE, the song was arranged by Druski and long-time SM Entertainment producer Yoo Young-jin, while the Korean lyrics were written by Kenzie, whom has written lyrics for other tracks from Red Velvet as well. An R&B track with elements of trap and future bass, "Psycho" tells about how one is in a "strange" relationship "full of ups and downs". Along with its accompanying music video, the song was released digitally as the lead single from Finale on December 23, 2019 by SM Entertainment.
Upon its release, "Psycho" received positive reviews from music critics for its "smooth and sultry" delivery over a "haunting" production. The song was a commercial success in South Korea, peaking at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart for three consecutive weeks. Moreover, the song attained international success, becoming their second chart-topper on Billboard's World Digital Songs chart, thus tying them with 2NE1 as the girl groups with most top 10 entries on the chart. As of March 14, 2020, the song has sold over 100,000 units in the US.[1]
Red Velvet (Hangul: 레드벨벳) is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. The group debuted on August 1, 2014, with the digital single "Happiness" and four group members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy. In March 2015, Yeri was added into the group.
Since their debut, Red Velvet has released two studio albums, one reissue album, one compilation album and nine extended plays in Korean, with eleven of them topping South Korea's Gaon Album Chart. Their singles "Happiness", "Ice Cream Cake", "Dumb Dumb", "Russian Roulette", "Rookie", "Peek-a-Boo", "Bad Boy" and "Psycho" have all charted in the top five on Gaon Digital Chart, while their singles "Red Flavor" and "Power Up" topped the chart upon release. Additionally, they made their Japanese debut in July 2018 with the extended play #Cookie Jar.
Regarded as one of the most popular K-pop groups worldwide by Time and Billboard, Red Velvet has received several awards for music, choreography and popularity, including the Golden Disc New Artist Award in 2015 and the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group in 2017. The group won their first international award for “Close to Me" in collaboration with Ellie Goulding at the Teen Choice Awards in 2019. That year, the group also made history by becoming the first girl group to achieve a number-one on the US iTunes Album Chart thrice in one year. Additionally, they won Song of the Year at the Asia Artist Awards for "Umpah Umpah" and Stage of the Year at the Soribada Best K-Music Awards in 2019.
