T-ARA was created by Core Contents Media CEO Kim Kwang-soo, and before they began their operations as a sextet, two members withdrew due to artistic disagreements after contributing a song to the Cinderella Man soundtrack. On July 27, 2009, the label released "Lie," their debut song (거짓말, Geojitmal), which included three new members. Cho Young-soo, who would go on to work with the group frequently, wrote the song.
The release of T-ARA coincided with a proliferation of girl groups on the Korean pop music scene, and a writer for the weekly magazine SisaIN observed that the old-school trot influence of "Lie" failed to capture the attention of the market's core customers, those who found nostalgia in 1990s acts like "S.E.S." and "Fin.K.L." Throughout its tenure, the group promoted a "girlish and innocent" image. With their collaboration with Supernova on the southern hip hop-oriented song "TTL (Time to Love)," T-ARA would have further popularity. The trio underwent a "180-degree shift" with the song, projecting a "sexier" image than in their debut, according to marketing materials.
